Standard Component Values

BS2488 and IEC publication 63 specify standard component values.

The values, summarised in the table below, span a single decade and approximate to a geometric progression. The basic values are repeated for each decade by multiplying by powers of 10.

The table identifies the values for the 6 most common series. The E number indicates the number of values in each decade. In general the lower numbered series are used for low tolerance components such as large electrolytic capacitors. E96 is most commonly applied to high precision components like 0.1% resistors.
